In the same country where children are starving, we have restaurants throwing away tons of food every day. Something has to be done NOW. What can be done though? Well for starters we need to spread awareness.Just because people are not aware of a problem does not mean that it doesn't exist.

The End Hunger Network was started in 1984 by actor Jeff Bridges. They have been working with the no kid hungry campaign to end child hunger by 2015.

If we discovered that another country was doing this to our children, we would declare war.

Food-borne Illnesses are a big problem for the restaurant industry. For this reason health departments around the country greatly regulate the industry. Food must be stored at safe temperatures. Another rule of food safety is first in first out or FIFO. What this means is that food that was bought first must be used first. By following this policy closely you can keep track of what was prepared, when it was prepared, and when it was purchased. In America there are 566,000 restaurants. If each one only wasted only one pound of food a day this would amount to 283 tons in just one day. This would be enough food to feed 1.5 million hungry children. Restaurants must do more to eliminate food waste. If allowed to continue wasting this vast amount of food, In a years time American restaurants will have wasted enough food to have fed the entire United States at least once.

There are nearly 17 million children in the U.S. that are not getting enough to eat. Half of these children live in families with 2 parents. Over half live in families with limited income but over the poverty line. It is one thing to be hungry and get up for a midnight snack, it is something else entirely to be hungry and wonder where your next meal is coming from.

The Department of Agriculture has put out a toolkit designed to fight hunger. You can find the toolkit here. By getting involved in your local community you can make a difference in somebody's life. You can create projects to help feed children in your area. Then by registering them with serve.gov you can get more volunteers to help you.
